Chinese technology giant Huawei has just announced an operating system called HongmengOS – or HarmonyOS in English. According to Huawei, the new Android rival can be used in smartphones, TVs, wearables and other Internet-of-Things devices. The Chinese smartphone giant announced its new OS just months after Google suspended Huawei’s Android license to comply with the ban enforced by the Donald Trump administration. Huawei happens to be one of the largest partners of Google’s Android. Here are eight reasons as to why the new ‘Huawei OS’ may mean ‘trouble’ for Google.

1.Huawei is the second largest Android OEM after Samsung with around 17% global market share. Losing Huawei would mean losing millions of Android users

According to a report by Counterpoint, Huawei ranked second after Samsung globally with 59.1 million shipments in Q1 2019. At a time when Google is planning to connect the next billion users to make them to use Google services, losing Huawei would be a big loss.

2. Chinese government may force other Chinese brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus and others to stop using Android OS

The popularity Chinese phone brands like Xiaomi, BBK Electronics group (OPPO, Vivo, Realme, OnePlus) and others have contributed to the popularity and growth of Android OS. If Chinese brands are forced to stop using Android then Google would be just left with Samsung as a major player.

3. If China prevents its own developers from making Android apps in the future, it could be a big blow for Google

Several popular games and apps are of Chinese origin and if the Chinese government prevents developers based out of China from making Android apps then this would definitely hurt Google.

4. Huawei can be one of the biggest competitor for Google in Europe and Asian market with its new ecosystem of HarmonyOS devices

Huawei has been planning about creating its own ecosystem of smart connected devices for quite some time. With a strong market base already in European and select Asian markets, the Chinese tech giant can be a big competitor for Google and it’s Android operating system.

5.China might shut its door for Google and other American companies forever if the Huawei trade ban continues

Reports suggest that Google has already stopped all efforts to enter China after the Huawei Ban by the Trump administration. This might further escalate to a point of no return with the Chinese government preventing other American tech companies as well.

6. Huawei is a full-fledged tech player with its own software, chipset, telecom equipment and developer support. Huawei can give serious competition to Android

7.To stay relevant to Huawei smartphone users on HarmonyOS, Google might have to pay Huawei for including its official Google suite of services in future

8.Huawei might offer a third-party solution to HarmonyOS-based smartphone users to connect to Gmail and other Google services which might not be safe

Google might lose face if any cyber security incident or privacy breach occurs from HarmonyOS users accessing Google services unofficially.
